Race Team Meeting to be held at MHYC on Sunday, March 12 at 4:30 p.m.
* A $250 deposit will be added to the price of this camp.
For our most advanced sailors who love the thrill of competition, we offer the MHYC Advanced Race Team. They race in c420s, Laser Radials, and Thistles, with options of learning to race a Tartan Ten. Race Team sailors are coached competitively and compete throughout the summer in Ohio as well as Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New York. The team races in many local and national events. Our top sailors travel to regional and national events sponsored by US Sailing, where the level of sailing is very competitive.
Race team members are provided with MHYC boats and equipment to use, and are assigned equipment prior to the first regatta. Starting in 2016, MHYC will require a $250 security deposit to cover damages or equipment loss throughout the season. If the boat is returned in similar to better shape, the deposit will be returned.
Coaches and Instructors
Our coaches are all chosen for their teaching, personal and sailing skills and they are typically experienced collegiate sailors. A high instructor-to-camper ratio ensures that each participant gets close supervision. Many of our coaches and instructors grew up in our camp, ensuring we carry on our longstanding traditions.
We base our instruction on a combination of Red Cross and US Sailing training and education programs. The safe operation of small sailboats, small powerboats as well other watercraft is stressed. The campers learn basic seamanship, navigation, rules of the road, weather and many other essential topics. US Sailing's curriculum includes STEM concepts such as understanding wind, small machines, the physics of sailing, water quality and more.
Facilities & Equipment
MHYC has one of the finest boating facilities on the Great Lakes. We have a fleet of more than 35 boats ranging in design from single-person Optimist dinghies to Club Flying Juniors, Laser Radials, Club 420, Thistles, and various other powerboats as well. Safety is our top priority, while “Fun” is a close second. Campers are supervised on the water at all times by instructors in support boats. We have the use of various areas of the clubhouse for holding classes, crafts, and as a place to go when it rains. Recreational swimming and lessons take place in our swimming pool, one of MHYC's great assets.
A $250 deposit is required and is included in this price.
