Learn to Sail clinics are a great introduction to the sport of sailing and general boating. Campers will be grouped by age and experience, and given the basics on boating safety and mechanics. Sailboats are the primary focus including rigging, knots, parts, steering, take off, landing at docks. Campers will also get exposure to other boating options including kayaks, paddleboards, powerboats. They will learn the basics of boating right of way, effects of wind and current, and more.
Our instructors are certified in Red Cross, CPR and have at least a Level One Coaching certification from US Sailing. They are all chosen for their teaching, personal and sailing skills. A high instructor-to-camper ratio ensures that each participant gets close supervision. Many of our instructors grew up at MHYC or similar camps, ensuring we carry on our longstanding traditions.
Learn to Sail via Hawken Camp. For those who seek transportation and extended care for the week, MHYC has partnered with Hawken School. For an additional transportation/child care fee, Hawken School's Lyndhurst campus will be responsible for the kids from 9a to 3p, which will transport the kids to/from MHYC for this session. To register for this option, see "Learn to Sail Camp at MHYC" in the "Passport Games, Sports & Physical Fitness" section of Hawken Summer Camp brochure @ www.hawken.edu/summer.
