2017 Start Opti Sailing Day Camp - Ages 7-8

Ages 7-8 | June 13-June 30 OR June 13-July 14, 2017 | 9a-4p

Bonus week: July 24-28, 2017 (Available only to full-time campers)

For younger sailors (or those just wanting to get a taste of boating) we offer the Start Opti Sailing day camp for 3 weeks or 5 weeks. A bonus 6th week is available to full-time campers July 24-28.

While sailing is the main focus of the camp curriculum, SOS Day Campers are paired up with counselors who most love working with the littlest campers. They spend their days adventuring and exploring the beautiful MHYC campus and the great outdoors. They take swimming lessons, do boating-related arts and crafts, explore kayaks, SUPs, powerboats, our beautiful beaches, and more. They typically become four-square experts within the first week. And they end up playing with and learning from the "big kids" at Crow's Nest Camp and the sail race teams.

By the end of camp, your child will understand how to:

  • Board and sit safely on various boats
  • Learn the parts of a sailboat and powerboat.
  • Learn important knots and how to cleat off boats.
  • Understand Points of sail, wind, steering a boat, how to handle adverse conditions.
  • Beach safety, watching the sky for weather, safety of swimming in different wind and water conditions.

MHYC has one of the finest boating facilities on the Great Lakes. We have a fleet of more than 35 boats ranging in design from single-person Optimist dinghies to Club Flying Juniors, Laser Radials, Club 420, and various other powerboats as well. Safety is our top priority, while “Fun” is a close second. Campers are supervised on the water at all times by instructors in support boats. We have the use of various areas of the clubhouse for holding classes, crafts, and as a place to go when it rains. Recreational swimming and lessons take place in our swimming pool, one of MHYC's great assets.

On days when the wind won't blow we have swimming, tubing and on-land activities. The East Beach is a great place for soccer, capture the flag, and the always popular camp sleepover. Rainy days are spent with movies, crafts, and in-depth sailing and racing tactics.

Racing is not the primary objective of the camp but it is an integral part of the daily program. Campers of all ages are involved in racing and those who choose can pursue an active schedule.

Child Care
Note that for children UNDER the age of 13, there will be supervised child care in the Teen Room, Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM. All parents must check in with the instructor on duty each day so that we know who is on the Club grounds. After 4:00 p.m., parents must arrange supervision for children staying on the grounds.

This program is limited to 15 kids and will fill up fast!
